 A few weeks ago, we announced a matching-gift campaign in partnership with Asian American Cultural & Artistic Foundation (AACAF) and 17-year old singing talent Sammi Su. On Saturday, July 22, Sammi performed a charity concert (and her first solo concert!) where all proceeds go to AYC. For every dollar that AYC sold in concert tickets, AACAF agreed to match that amount up to $5,000. The final numbers are in! AYC raised a whopping $6,200 in ticket sales. Including AACAF’s matching donation of $5,000...a total of $11,200 was raised to support art education at AYC! We surpassed our fundraising goal of $10,000! In case you missed the concert, here are a few highlights below:   On Friday, July 14, Media Action Network for Asian Americans (MANAA) coordinated with AYC to provide a panel discussion on Asian American presence in the media. For our students, it was their first time participating in a panel discussion and they enjoyed asking questions to the panelists which included the very talented Suzy Nakamura, Krista Marie Yu from the ABC show "Dr. Ken", and Leonardo Nam from the HBO show "Westworld." Our students learned so much about the importance of diversity in the television and film industry, and so much more. This was a wonderful, positive experience for our students and they were reminded that they can achieve their dreams as long as they work hard and never give up! 
Last week, US Bankcard Services donated tickets and transportation so that over 80 of our students could enjoy a wonderful field trip to Discovery Cube Los Angeles! The Discovery Cube museum features giant animatronic dinosaurs and tons of fun-filled interactive exhibits that stimulate young minds to think critically and creatively. One 4th grade student exclaimed as he entered the museum, ""This is my dream come true to see dinosaurs!" This is the eighth year that US Bankcard Services and Anne Yang, their Marketing Manager, have partnered with AYC by sponsoring an annual field trip for ACE Summer Program Students. US Bankcard Services even provides the transportation from AYC's Youth Center to the field trip location, which make a huge difference! Field trips sponsored by US Bankcard Services in recent years include the Hollywood Bowl, Los Angeles Zoo and the Zimmer Children's Museum. We are so grateful to US Bankcard Services for this generous donation and the joy it was able to bring our ACE Summer Program students! Sina (全球新聞) Walmart grants $81,000 total to support the Asian and Pacific Islander (API) Children and Families Nutrition and Food Assistance Program through the Asian Pacific Community Fund On June 29, the Walmart Foundation State Council and the Asian Pacific Community Fund (APCF) announced a $24,000 grant to support the Emergency Food Program at the Asian Youth Center (AYC). Walmart Foundation gave a total of $81,000 in grant funding to APCF for the Asian and Pacific Islander (API) Children and Families Nutrition and Food Assistance Program. As a community foundation, APCF distributed the funds to three of its partner organizations to provide assistance and distribute 40,000 pounds of food to 4,800 people in the next year. In addition to AYC, grant funds were awarded to Korean American Family Services and Koreatown Youth & Community Center. Since 2014, Walmart Foundation has committed to focusing its efforts on creating a more affordable, accessible, sustainable and healthier food system across the globe, starting in local communities.  "AYC is so grateful for the support of the Walmart Foundation and APCF," expressed Michelle Freridge, AYC's Executive Director. "This grant will support the purchase of a refrigerator and shelving units for our Emergency Food Program so we can store and distribute more nutritious and familiar foods, and feed more hungry families. I also want to take this time to recognize Florence Lin, our Community Relations Manager, for overseeing this program." AYC's Emergency Food Program has provided culturally-appropriate food to low-income, immigrant, and at-risk families in need for over 14 years.. The population in the West San Gabriel Valley, where efforts of AYC's Emergency Food Program are focused, has a high concentration of low-income API communities, with high rates of recent immigrants. Due to various barriers, such as not speaking English, difficulty finding or maintaining employment, and unfamiliarity with American food and culture, these families face high risk of food insecurity. AYC's Emergency Food Program provides short-term hunger relief for families, so each person in the household can lead a healthy, active life. |
